Chely Wright - Wright Contemplated Suicide After 'Meltdown'

Gay country star CHELY WRIGHT considered taking her own life after
personal conflicts over her sexuality led to a "meltdown".

The singer 'came out' as a lesbian this week (beg03May10), announcing
the news in an interview with People magazine.

Wright admits she felt pressured to keep her sexuality a secret
throughout her career, and her internal struggles reached boiling
point after an emotional conversation with fellow country star John
Rich.

She tells Access Hollywood, "He said, 'You're not gay are you?' I
said, 'No, John, I'm not.' He said, 'Good, thank God.' And that began
a spiral for me. I had a meltdown shortly after that."

The Shut Up and Drive singer, 39, reveals she suffered an emotional
breakdown in 2006 which led to her standing in front of a mirror with
a loaded gun - but a last-minute change of heart saved her from
suicide.

She explains, "I was looking at myself in a mirror... as I was about
to do it. I just looked at myself and something snapped and I started
to cry... and I realised I have too much to live for.

"I may lose my career in country music (by 'coming out'), that will
break my heart, but it's okay. I have a lot of different pieces of my
heart that matter and that's what I've come to learn."

I am a 53-year old white male and consider myself a Reagan
conservative. I met my first openly gay person back in 1979 when he
was hired as a co-worker in a convenience store in Jackson, MS. On his
first day he told me that he was gay and not to feel threatened that
he would "try and turn me". I became friends with him and some of his
gay friends and came to understand their choice of lifestyle. Having
said that, I still do not accept the "flaming" gays. I don't care what
color, religion, lifestyle, etc. that you are as long as I consider
you normal in my own selfish mind. I guess all of us have our own
personal prejudices.

I have been a fan of Chely Wright since her first singles in 1994. To
me her "coming out" has not diminished her singing talent, her song-
writing abilities, her support of our troops nor her dedication to her
personal causes (Reading, Writing and Rythym for instance). I wish her
only the best for the future and continued sccess in the music field.

Well said, except for the "choice of lifestyle."

If you mean choosing to be flamboyant, that's one thing.

But no one chooses their sexuality.

Oh really? Chely chose to be a heterosexual for the first 36 years of
her life and probably slept with quite a few boys and men for the last
20 of those years.
