Brooks & Dunn win at country music awards By TOM GARDNER, Associated
Press Writer
1 hour, 6 minutes ago

LAS VEGAS - Brooks & Dunn, the most honored artists in the history of
the Academy of Country Music's awards show, picked up a record 20th
and 21st trophies Tuesday night as country music's elite gathered to
perform and compete for honors.

Newcomer Carrie Underwood, last year's "American Idol" winner, was
also a double winner, taking top new female vocalist and single of the
year awards. The latter was for "Jesus Take the Wheel," a song she
performed on the show.

"I wouldn't be here if God hadn't opened all the doors for me," she
told the audience.

Kenny Chesney captured the entertainer of the year award.

Brooks & Dunn claimed the first award handed out Tuesday, song of the
year for "Believe," a gospel-tinged tune written by Craig Wiseman,
co-writer of the 2005 song of the year, "Live Like You Were Dying."

"It's always fun to be a part of something so strong and so
spiritual," said Kix Brooks, who also shared the top vocal duo award
with Dunn.

Brad Paisley, who had a leading six nominations going into the
show, got the award he said he wanted, album of the year for "Time
Well Wasted." He also shared vocal event of the year honors with
Dolly Parton for "When I Get Where I'm Going."

Keith Urban was top male vocalist for a second year and Sara
Evans, up against Underwood, Martina McBride, Gretchen Wilson
and Lee Ann Womack, captured her first ACM award, for top female
vocalist.

"I've waited for this my whole life," she said.

Jason Aldean, whose song "Why" is No. 1 this week, was named top new
male vocalist and Sugarland was honored as top new duo or vocal group.

The three-hour show was as much about music as awards, however, and
Trace Adkins provided one of the evening's musical highlights. Dressed
all in black — from his cowboy hat to his leather suit — Adkins added
a Las Vegas touch to the program as he performed his song "Honky Tonk
Badonkadonk" while surrounded by shimmying showgirls.

Reba McEntire, hosting the show for an eighth time, also took a
shot at country music's newest outlaws, the Dixie Chicks.

"I don't know why I was so nervous about hosting this show this year,"
she said. "If the Dixie Chicks can sing with their foot in their
mouths, surely I can host this sucker."

The Chicks, criticized in country circles when Natalie Maines told
an audience in 2003, "Just so you know, we're ashamed the president of
the United States is from Texas," are striking back at their critics
in their new single, "Not Ready to Make Nice."

Earlier in the show, Wilson paid tribute to more traditional country
themes, including the nation's soldiers, working men and the Bible, in
the song "Politically Incorrect."

This year's 41st annual ceremony, at the MGM Grand, was the third to
be held in Las Vegas after it moved from Los Angeles. Airing on CBS,
it went up against part one of the two-part "American Idol" finale on
Fox.

The (Nashville) Tennessean reported Tuesday that the academy wants to
move the awards show to April to escape the conflict with "Idol," TV's
top-rated show. The size of the "Idol" audience has dwarfed that for
the awards show the past three years.

Performers Tuesday included Paisley, Underwood, Urban, Chesney, Rascal
Flatts, Miranda Lambert, Toby Keith, Dierks Bentley,
Montgomery Gentry, Big & Rich and McBride.

There was also a medley of songs honoring the late Buck Owens. The
creator of country music's Bakersfield Sound died in March.

Vince Gill received the Home Depot Humanitarian Award for his
community service and charitable giving of his time and talent — a
trophy and a playground built in a city of his choice. He said that
probably would be New Orleans. Previous winners include McEntire,
McBride, Lonestar and Neal McCoy.

Awards announced before the broadcast included: producer, Buddy
Cannon; on-air personality — national, Blair Garner; on-air
personality — major market, Gerry House; on-air personality, medium
market — Scott Innes; on-air personality, small market — Becky Austin
and Brad Austin; radio station, major market — WFMS-FM; radio station,
medium market — WUSY-FM; radio station, small market (tie) — WGSQ-FM,
WYCT-FM; bass player, Michael Rhodes; fiddle player, Jonathan Yudkin;
guitar player, Pat Buchanan; percussionist-drum, Shannon Forrest;
piano-keyboard, Mike Rojas; specialty instrument, Bryan Sutton; steel
guitar, Paul Franklin.

The 3,000 members of the academy select the nominees and winners of
the awards.

I saw their video for "not ready to make nice" and say what you will about
them, the song is a good one and the video is compelling in an artistic,
and visual way. I'm not a country music fan but I do own one of their cd's

The reason so many fans got upset with her comment: It's the location where
she decided to make her comments. I have said all along. If she said it here
in the States, it would have blown over. But she didn't and then they went
on a spewing spree as one person on the radio put it..... That is what
really hurt them. They have the right to say what ever they want.

They attacked country music and their fans with that statement. If there

She said that about the country fans who won't listen to their CDs
because they don't like what they said about George W.....not ALL
country music fans. That was definitely taken out of context. You
know....the small minded fans who think you are un-American if you
don't believe you should be allowed to disagree or criticize George W.
The reason so many fans got upset with her comment: It's the location where
she decided to make her comments. I have said all along. If she said it here
in the States, it would have blown over. . . .
Oh, baloney. You and the rest would have been carping on it anyway.
You just use that for justification, pretending that you have a high
tolerance for free speech, as if you set the bar REAL high and they
reached it anyway. Her comment was mild and they were in ENGLAND, for
God's sake. Your same crowd reacted the same way to comments by people
like Susan Sarandon and Tim Robbins, but you just weren't as effective
in your disdain because what they do isn't so directly market sensitive,
and moviegoers are a different breed, not so self-righteous. You're
petty, and you abuse what ever petty power you get. I hope this next CD
of theirs sells so many, they'll never have to work again. Hell, I like
their music, so I might buy it myself, just to show I support America.
I liked them before, and I hear this new one is even more like the
pop-country I like so much (Faith Hill, Shania Twain, Terri Clarke;
those types).

thats rather small minded of HER then, to assume that everybody who listens
to a Toby Keith or Reba CD, is a supporter of George Bush.

This is just getting worse and worse. Shame, because I always thought
Martie and Emily were such positive role models for young female musicians.
Now they are simply lightning rods for political purposes.

I own their previous CD's. I will not buy this new one and if they don't
want to be in my CD exchanger with Reba, then the Chicks will start
collecting dust. That is my right as an American. They need to remember
Freedom of Speech goes two ways.....
Barbara
Hi Barb
The thing is, they put this new CD out.......the first single was
guaranteed to cause controversy, hence publicity....look at all the
free publicity they're getting now......This was planned.....no one
can tell me it wasn't. They believed people would hear the first
single and wonder what else was on the CD....and go buy it to find
out...the only problem is, alot of people just plain don't care
anymore, at least enough about them to buy it.

Then the statement above gets released about Reba and Toby Keith. I
don't care much about Toby, but in no way are the Chicks even in the
same caliber as Reba...Her star rises so far above them that they will
never soar high enough to catch her. but it was another publicity
grab...it got them even more publicity. What's so funny is all these
people crabbing about what Reba said last night concerning them on the
Awards Show....she was reading off of a teleprompter.....there's no
way she made all of those jokes, etc up by herself at the spur of the
moment...She's funny and she's good but she ain't that good...LOL

Next you have the statement Emily (I think it was) made about "The
View".....and today on "The View" there was a written apology from
her, stating she never meant to insult them, she apologized and that
she was one chick eating crow....MORE PUBLICITY, FREE.

I really believe what they're doing is causing all this publicity
to cause curiosity, to get people to buy their CD's, to go to their
shows to see what the hoopla is about....Me? I'm like you, I'm not
buying into it....Natalie's big mouth got her into trouble, she can
keep her foot in her mouth as far as I'm concerned. While I think
Emily and Martie are both very talented, I never really did care for
Natalies nasally voice much to begin with....

I think if Natalie had made this statement here in our own country,
it wouldn't have been so bad...but to make it in London, where they
were against us anyways for starting the war in iraq was just
unforgivable. It was a statement made to gain acceptance of their
fanbase there and to grab a few laughs. While I believe in free
speech, this was tasteless, disrespectful, lacking in tact and very
unAmerican to blast the leader of our country in that location.
Despite what anyone thinks of Bush, his approval ratings, etc, he is
still the leader of this country and deserves a certain amount of
respect. AND before anyone blasts me, I am in no way a Bush supporter,
but I would never, ever go to another country and insult him.

Remains to be seen, whether all the fans they lost will be replaced by new
ones. The "new direction" (koff koff) isnt non-country enough to attract an
entirely new audience. They will sell a shitload of CDs over the next 10
days to 2 weeks. It'll be very interesting to see how long the furor will
push the sales. This country's attention span is about what, 15 minutes?

That is EXACTLY what our soldiers have fought for. The right to DISAGREE
with a politician, political stance, or political party and do it loudly and
proudly. Personally, I feel that the more you disagree, the more patriotic
you are, as opposed to following blindly like sheep.

Alot of people didn't care for Clinton but that didn't stop them from "not

They didn't just take aim their words at Bush. They aimed their anger at
Country Music fans and Reba just recently. Martie from the Chicks said: "I'd
rather have a small following of really cool people who get it, who will
grow with us as we grow and are fans for life, than people that have us in
their five-disc changer with Reba McEntire and Toby Keith." We don't want
those kinds of fans. They limit what you can do." That is what the foot in
the mouth statement was about ... NOT the words from London.
Reba and country music fans don't have the right to say anything back? They
brought Reba into their fight, not the other way around. I know of country
music stations in West Texas that continued to play their music after the
famous words from that London stage. With these current words, they were
recently pulled from the stations. Why should country music stations that
were supporting them continue to do so after bashing the fans and the
artist?
The Chicks need to learn to pick their fights and they want to continue on.
Well they are going have to continue without me. I have enough going in my
life to care about how angry they are...

those kinds of fans. They limit what you can do." That is what the foot in
the mouth statement was about ... NOT the words from London.
You're not being fair. All of that was in retaliation for what had been
done to them by country fans at the outset. Supposedly they were
complaining to country radio stations for playing The Dixie Chicks'
music. Natalie's offhanded remark really didn't deserve all that, and
it reflects badly on country music fans.

Ya know what Barb, I've had it with this topic.....we aren't going to

turn it into a political discussion and there can be no other opinion

My son tried to get me tickets for his concert in San Antonio this weekend.
What a cool gift that would have been. I would have gone with my sons girl
friend... My favorite place to see George is on his home turf. He puts on a
helluva show there.

I went to one of his Team Roping Events. Back in 99... That was the year I
won backstage passes and would you believe I behaved myself.. lmao

Ya know Tracy Lawrence is touring with him this year......I rather
doubt I will be seeing him since he is doing this.....With George
Strait, as soon as word gets around he's coming to town, people
literally camp out to get the tickets as soon as ticketmaster,
whatever opens. He usually sells out in like 45 minutes or less. I
would love to see GS in concert just once before I leave this earth,
but unless I win them, I don't stand a snowballs chance in hell of
getting tickets...LOL........

YOU behaved yourself around George? Unbelievable! LOL.......did you
get to meet with him? Just wonder if he's as shy as he appears.....

Dressed
all in black - from his cowboy hat to his leather suit - Adkins added
a Las Vegas touch to the program as he performed his song "Honky Tonk
Badonkadonk" while surrounded by shimmying showgirls.
Reba McEntire, hosting the show for an eighth time, also took a
shot at country music's newest outlaws, the Dixie Chicks.
"I don't know why I was so nervous about hosting this show this year,"
she said. "If the Dixie Chicks can sing with their foot in their
mouths, surely I can host this sucker."
The Chicks, criticized in country circles when Natalie Maines told
an audience in 2003, "Just so you know, we're ashamed the president of
the United States is from Texas," are striking back at their critics
in their new single, "Not Ready to Make Nice."
snip
I saw their video for "not ready to make nice" and say what you will about
them, the song is a good one and the video is compelling in an artistic,
and visual way. I'm not a country music fan but I do own one of their cd's
"fly" and I must say that I think they are very talented musicians. And if
they want to say that they're ashamed of W., what's the big deal? Hasn't
Reba ever heard of the first amendment? Singing with your foot in your
mouth
Post by myname2use4now
takes a lot more talent that staring in a lame sit com.
I own their previous CD's. I will not buy this new one and if they don't
want to be in my CD exchanger with Reba, then the Chicks will start
collecting dust. That is my right as an American. They need to remember
Freedom of Speech goes two ways.....

well, its Nashville, so, how much of that can really be creditted to the
"artist"? Not surprising that out of all those awards listed, most of the
winners were SINGERS who dont write their own material and cannot play an
instrument with any degree of accomplishment. Thats what Nashville is now,
a country fried American Idol, for the most part. Thats what I always liked
about the Chicks, they could write AND play their own stuff, very good
players. Sad that it has come to this. but the video? Unless they are Kate
Bush, I wonder how much they had to do with that.....

I didn't watch the show, but caught the first couple of minutes while
I was finishing up something before I changed the chanel. Just our
out of curiosity, what the hell was Reba wearing. God, I thought her
taste in clothing had improved over the years. Guess Not.
As far as Reba's comments, if she had any class at all, she'd have
refused to slam the chicks. But then, she's always been living
proof that you can give white trash money, and they just become
white trash with money. This is a woman who capitilized on the deaths
of her former band members for years, hasn't released a decent song
in at least 10 years and was long since passed over for any award
nominations, so she decided hosting was the only way to keep
her face out there. That and some stupid sitcom on the WB.
Country music has become a joke and someone needs to tell Reba
her 15 minutes are long since over.

It wasn't the most brilliant quip, but all she said was that the Chicks
put their foot in their mouth. No surprise there. Big deal! Try to get
over the joke at the DC expense, it ain't the end of the world
(although Maines will probably write another self-pity song about the
trauma of being laughed at by the entire CMA audience; you know, with
those same kind of lines, "I'm so mad , I couldn't care less, I kind of
like it, how could they do this, what meanies, I'm a suffering
pilgrim.... " etc etc....).

Reba seems to be doing pretty well btw thanks.

You've got nerve babe......most people of class don't act like you do
with your all mighty, I'm better than you, attitude.....For your
information, I own two homes....how many do you have right now? Also
please note I said OWN, not buying.....so don't go throwing the
trailer trash label out at me.....I sort of figured you would come
back with something as immature as that one.....you could have at
least came up with something original, instead of the same old shit.

I hope someday that someone is as hateful to you as you are to
everyone else.....and for that matter, if there is no one in country
music right now that you do like or that meets your high standards,
why the hell are you even posting in here? Why would you care? Other
than to spew out your redneck attitude. And people wonder why country
music fans are called rednecks? You're a prime example.

Funny how Reba has stayed successful through out the years, doing TV,
Broadway and other things.... Can't say the same for a lot of the artist out
there.... At least Reba is not afraid to try new things.

body, it's a wonder you can even find room to put the food you eat.
Every post of yours for the last year has been of the negative nature.
Funny how Reba has stayed successful through out the years, doing TV,
Broadway and other things.... Can't say the same for a lot of the artist out
there.... At least Reba is not afraid to try new things.

It's called talent......she can sing, she can act, and now she has her
own clothing line......I like the fact that she branches out.....shows
me the woman has ambition.

I didn't watch the show, but caught the first couple of minutes while
I was finishing up something before I changed the chanel. Just our
out of curiosity, what the hell was Reba wearing. God, I thought her
taste in clothing had improved over the years. Guess Not.
As far as Reba's comments, if she had any class at all,
Reba is a right wing loon.
I didn't watch the CMAs because she disgusts me.

I know that Reba is friends with the President, but I thought she had
more class than that. But at this point I'm sure the Chicks could give a
crap, considering their album is about to debut at No. 1.

Is Willie Nelson as ostrocized from the country music world as the
Chicks since he has similiar feelings about the war?

Willie Nelson didn't go to a country who was negative towards us about
the war and spew his insults at the President specifically to gain
acceptance of his self and to get a few laughs.

And yet, right after the infamous incident, they returned to the US to
another tour. Given the shit storm they'd ignited, they made a point of
offering refunds to anyone who wanted one. And all the Clear Channel C&W
stations made a big deal about it.

And Every. Single. Performance. was sold out, standing room only.

As far as I can tell, for every CD burned or run over with a steam roller
by a crazed (and stupid) C&W fan, they sold at least two or three new CDs
to new mainstream pop fans.

So, in the end, whether or not anybody agrees or disagrees with them
doesn't really matter. Neither do you.

More Americans than what? Yes, Fox has the highest cable news ratings,

So if we decide not to buy a Toby Keith CD what does that show? Where is it
in the law that every American has to buy a CD by a group that put out a
crappy song. Yes their first single IMO is crappy. So now we have to buy
the CD to prove that we don't care about the Chicks politics? That is b.s.

I've heard several songs and no melody has grabbed me yet, no instrumental
bit captivated my attention whatsoever. One thing I did notice, an obvious
and overt attempt to limit or push into the background, the big time use of
banjo and fiddle in their music. Sure it pops up from time to time here,
but not nearly as much as before. A definite attempt to make them sound
"less country"? Good production job, excellent even. Some nice lap steel
playing here and there.

That's bullshit, plain and simple. It's my right to protest as I see

It's been interesting following this subject and thread. Seems there's a
group that needs to make Maines wrong.

No matter how one argues w/ them, they'll just find another reason to make
her wrong.

- not a true patriot
- should respect the office of the president
- shouldn't have said it on foreign soil
- if she had courage, she would have said it in Texas
- and so forth

It's much more important for them to make her wrong than it is to use reason
or intellect.

"But I believe he commands a certain amount of respect as the
Leader of Our Country"
The standard response of morons. Clinton was the leader of our
country too, that didn't stop the conservatives from worrying about
how many blow jobs he got. Adolph Hitler was the leader
of Germany. Sadam was the leader of Iraq. Castro is
the leader of Cuba. BFD. Being a leader does not earn you
respect.George Bush has been proven, over and over again, to be
a liar (what the levy's were breached? who knew? No WMD's, surely you
jest, who me, determined to start a war in Iraq?). On top of that,
he's an idiot. I'm supposed to respect him because he has the title of
President? The moron can't even pronounce Nuclear for god's sake.
The basis of this country is that we aren't required to follow
along, in lockstep, with our leaders. We are allowed, supposedly
even encouraged, to voice our opinions. Assuming we are
intelligent enough to form some on our own. What this whole
episode has proven is that most country fans just can't accomplish
that.
Brava!
Bush was ELECTED (only with Jeb's help), not crowned.

Because we disagree with what you think, that makes us morons? That's
about the most ignorant thing I've heard of yet....I don't like Bush,
in fact, I'm not even a Republican, but I still believe the Office of
the President demands a certain amount of respect. Call it what you
want, maybe it's because I was raised in a different generation than
you....maybe it's because our parents taught us respect for our
country......it could be alot of things.....but to resort to name
calling because someones opinion differs from you is nothing but
immature.

Reread my post. I did not use the word moron. However, you are behaving that
way.

You in no way understand what I wrote. You are the one who is being
immature.

Even funnier, there is NO ONE talking about the music itself. I get the
distinct impression, Natalie Maines could have farted into a microphone and
lots of you people would buy it "out of support".

No, this isn't true. Those of us who buy Dixie Chicks albums do it because they
make great music and because there is actually some professed purpose to their
lives and that purpose shows (does it ever!) in their music, IMHO. Oh, and yes,
we also buy the music because these girls got guts. God bless 'em.

on THIS THREAD, it sure as hell is. Not one single person has discussed the
music on the CD. I've heard it recently, and it didnt really do a whole lot
for me. the You Cant Afford No Ring tune was good, some killer playing on
that. A lot of the rest of it was unspectacular to me, and sounded like
they had turned over the production reigns to somebody else. A very
definite attempt to get away from what they were so good at, pure country.
Who knows, maybe they can make it work.

gone on record stating that they are now going to buy the chicks new album
because of their politics.

like screw off, but hey, it's been a rough week. I thought you
dealt with children all the time, doesn't your kid have a gaggle

Grow up.....that's about all I'm going to tell ya.......and the last

Daughter. I don't know what's happened to you in your life to make you

Who the fuck do you think you are? Like I care if it's the last thing
you're
going to tell me. My life is just fine and dandy. I've just thought you
were a joke
for as long as I can remember. You have so many better things to do,
yet
you are consistently in here, along with your buddy the other fat
housewife,
with your infinite wisdom. Do you have an idea how stupid you sound
saying
you watch Pure Country every week? Now there's a rich, full life if I
ever heard
of one. No wonder you couldn't carry on an intelligent political
conversation,
falling into the moron's line "he's my President, so I'm going to
respect him".

I remember the old threads where you were constantly in here defending
the
wife beater every time anyone dared to say anything negative about the
looser.
You were major pissed because many people wouldn't support his "career"
(kind
of a stretch to call what he had a career, but we'll go with it),
because he beat
the crap out of a woman. Yet you see no problem with boycotting someone
for voicing an opinion "on foreign soil" What a joke. The reality is
you've
always had a problem with acts like the Chicks because they achieved
success
on a level most of your favorite artists, let's see, if I remember
correctly, in addition
to number one, the wife beater, you liked Travis Tritt and Aaron
Tippin. Yeah, thriving
careers there. But they have fared better than the wife beater.

Well, fuck you too honey. I suggest you go back to studying your movie.
I'd
say that's about the right level for you to stay at.

Is Willie Nelson as ostrocized from the country music world as the
Chicks since he has similiar feelings about the war?
It's blasphemy to even utter the Ditzy Twits and Willie Nelson in the same
sentence.
They're just annoying, stupid bints who don't know when to shut the fuck up
and then behave like bitchy mall rats and throw hissy fits when --
surprise!--people get sick of them. I have never heard anything even
remotely "political" or radical or intelligent coming out of their mouths,
unless it's a grand statement to say that Bush sucks. Hey, *I* think Bush
sucks. To elevate this to a "political" issue is inane.
Willie Nelson oozes cool. The "Chicks" try to be, desperately, which is the
uncoolest thing of all.

Nope. But I believe those who pay their taxes have more right to speak out than
those who don't. :)
I happen to enjoy and own music by both Willie and the Chicks.
I bought my first WN album over 30 years ago and my latest Chick album 30
minutes ago.
