[Tommy Roe & Freddy Weller, BTW.]
I remember Freddy Weller well, for his C&W remakes of pop hits in the
late 1960s, which meant he was pretty big around here, where Country
was king long before it was most anywhere else:

Freddy Weller (born Wilton Frederick Weller on September 9, 1947) is a
United States country music singer-songwriter from Atlanta, Georgia.
His recording career started in 1969, while he was playing guitar in
the band Paul Revere & The Raiders.

He recorded many country hits like Joe South's Games People Play,
Chuck Berry's The Promised Land and Too Much Monkey Business, She
Loves Me Right Out Of My Mind, Indian Lake, Down In The Boondocks, and
many others.
Hey, it's just as big a scandal as the "Leonard Cohen fiasco" your pal
is still whining about.
What exactly are you implying here, George Dance?
That, if I'm a plagiarist and thief (for quoting Cohen without
attribution), you're also a plagiarist and thief (for quoting Knopfler
and Roe & Weller without attribution).
Would you care to explain?
From now on, when you mention Cohen, you can expect to read about
Messrs. Knopfler, Roe, and Weller.

I remember two of his singles made the pop charts in Kingston, Ont.
where I was living at the time: Games People Play, of course, and
These Are Not My People. I never knew about his co-writing Dizzy,
though, till I looked at my CD of Roe's Greatest Hits.

Since that's still out on my desk, I should probably say a few words
about it before putting it away. The CD copies the album that came out
in '69, and it's an interesting mix: Roe's three hits from that year,
Dizzy, Jam up and Jelly Tight (also co-written with Weller) and
Heather Honey; Roe's four 'oldies' (Sheila and Everybody from pre-
Beatles days, Sweet Pea and Hooray for Hazel from '66); and, as
filler, three other hits from '69: Crimson and Clover, Sugar, Sugar,
and Baby I Love You. (That last's another pre-Beatles 'oldie', of
course, but Andy Kim had a big hit with it in '69 as well.)

There; now I can put it away.
