I love the song and they do a great job on it...<<
Dave Matthews and Emmylou Harris did a nice version on the Johnny Cash >>
Not for nothing, but Dave Matthews sucks.
Haha... TRUE

Lefty's is still marginally the best for me, but one of Joan Baez's
versions is close behind. (She recorded it twice, at least; in one
version she sings the chorus after the first verse, in the other she
waits until the second verse to sing the chorus, the way most
interpreters of this great, great song do.)
The Kingston Trio did two versions, the first not very good, but the
second version (on "Twenty-Five Years On," I think, or "Looking For
The Sunshine," albums cut around 1982 with only Nick Reynolds of the
original Trio remaining) was pretty good too. It starts out with a
hollow banging noise, (drums?) as of the sound of a hammer building a
gallows.... Very macabre.
John Anderson did a pretty good version on his
"Wild & Blue" album and even had Merle sing
one of the choruses...very tasteful.
John Anderson's is my favorite. The Band's is awesome, Joan's... wow. And, always Emmylou. Thanks for being someone who knows John Anderson's <3
