Anyone been to Carlsbad, New Mexico, USA lately?
The last time I was there (~15 years ago), the Flying X put on a
'chuckwagon style' dinner and then a show.
They played a good mix of old and new cowboy songs, mixed in
a little comedy - very entertaining.
Just wondered if they are still around; I have the three albums
that they had out at the time.
Regards,
Rick

Hi Rick!
James Blanton the father passed in 1980 so the band broke up.
His son Little Jim still plays guitar and sings Tenor as a one man show for private parties and events.
He calls Purcell, OK home now. He was a cowboy & official entertainer on The Great American Cattle Drive '95 that here'd 250 Longhorn steers and 100 horses from Fort Worth to Miles City. 6 months & 1,700 miles. It had not been done for over 100 years so the participants were inducted in the Old Trail Drovers Museum in San Antonio, TX.
His other son Raymond still lives on the property in Carlsbad.
Nell, mother and wife passed in 2005.

Little Jim (JD) still has a few of their old albums for sale and his own cassettes and a CD.

There's a lot of these groups in the western states, and some of them
are really, really good. Another is the Bar J Wranglers in Jackson, WY;
I've got four of their albums/tapes. They were also one of the backup
groups on Randy Travis' trail drive TV special that was on TNN a couple
of years ago.

The Blanton of the Flying X Chuckwagon were with the Bar D Wranglers in Colorado Springs as well. The Bar J Wranglers are great! Babe Humphries is a good friend of the Blanton. Awesome show they put on.
